We are proud to come together as the California Dental Hygienists’ Association (CDHA) San Diego community to support San Diego's Alzheimer’s Association and the important work being done to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by dementia.
As dental hygienists, we see firsthand how closely oral health is connected to overall health and quality of life. For individuals living with dementia, maintaining good oral hygiene can become increasingly challenging. Changes in memory, mobility, behavior, and the ability to complete daily self-care can make brushing, flossing, and maintaining regular dental visits difficult.
This is a cause that is especially meaningful to our dental hygiene community because we understand that oral healthcare is healthcare. Poor oral health can contribute to pain, infection, difficulty eating, and other health complications—issues that can be particularly concerning for older adults and individuals living with cognitive impairment.
Our passion goes beyond simply treating teeth. We believe in caring for the whole person, protecting dignity, promoting comfort, and helping individuals maintain their health and independence for as long as possible.
Many of our members have personal and professional experiences caring for loved ones and patients living with dementia. These experiences remind us that compassionate care, education, prevention, and access to healthcare can make a meaningful difference.
By participating in Walk4ALZ, CDHA San Diego hopes to raise awareness, support Alzheimer’s research and resources, and shine a light on an often-overlooked part of dementia care: the importance of maintaining oral health.
