Ten years ago, the world we knew was changed forever when my brothers and I moved our father, William Willoughby Miller, into a nursing home for Alzheimer's. I remember the first time my dad asked me who I was: He apologized that he hadn't been introduced to me. Over the following years, I visited him in Spain, a chicken ranch, and the Point Loma Submarine Base. Each visit, more of my dad was gone.

And then, the unimaginable for my brothers and my sister: We were losing our mom, bit by bit, to the same damn disease. This has shaken us to our core and broken our hearts entirely.

October 16th, we will be walking for our parents, and for ourselves: As the children of parents with Alzheimer's, we may find ourselves at the edge of the same path.
